you can watch my above. i talk about my creative path from high school up until now. i make some bad jokes, and speak from the heart on going after your dreams even when they feel scary. if you don’t know about creative mornings lectures, you should check them out . they are all over the world and free to attend!

ps. i’m still so touched by the feedback on that anxiety post that was so difficult for me to write. anxiety can make you feel very alone and that post proved the exact opposite, so thank you. your suggestions and stories really moved me. i wanted to reach through the computer and hug each one of you. -bri

I really enjoyed this, Bri! I can’t wait to hit up a Creative Mornings event in DC.

    lisa says:

bri – thank you for sharing your journey. when i look back, my best decisions have been the scary ones too. being an art director/designer, i am very sensitive so hearing you say that is comforting. as my journey continues, i am grateful for my past, present and excited for what is to come.

    thanks for your inspiration!

    Rebecca says:

Thank you for sharing this. I’ve had my own business since 2008 and went full time 2.5 years ago in 2011. At times I get so riddled with anxiety and fear about “what’s next” that it impacts my day. Other times I just enjoy everything. Listening to your journey reminded me that a bad couple of days or even a bad month doesn’t have to be “the end” of the wonderful journey I am on.

    Thanks Bri!

    Diana says:

    jackie says:

loved the talk, bri! i love hearing about other people’s creative journeys and what leads them where. your quote about how scary decisions have often been your best ones is so true; it’s the big leap of the unknown that provides that opportunity for learning and observing.

    inspired 🙂

Hi Bri! What an awesome talk! You really made me feel so much better knowing that you are scared too sometimes in spite of your successes. I think your blog and everything you have accomplished is great! Learning more about your trajectory makes me feel inspired to move forward more with my freelance career until I get to that point where things just “click”. In the meantime I just want to say that I so appreciate your blog and all that you and your team put in to it. Keep up the great/hard/fun work 🙂

    DeNai Jones says:

    Sarah says:

Thank you so much for this! I didn’t mean to sit down and watch this whole thing all at once, and somehow got lost in it. Thanks for the great advice, I’m going to make some scary jumps with my business this year and I appreciate the push!

Love, love, loved this! It’s so comforting to know that I’m not the only one that’s afraid of jumps. Your talk seriously put me in a better mood and made me laugh out loud at points. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

    Fadwa says:

This video is so inspiring, it literally illuminated my night ! I’ve been following your journey on your blog since I finished art school… I’m a graphic designer now, and I also started my blog while I was really unhappy in my first job. The blog was like a bubble preventing me from becoming insane :d and it is still making me meet a lot of interesting persons. I still have a day job, which is not the most fulfilling, but freelancing full time here in Morocco is tricky for a lot of reasons. And at the moment I’m working on a personnal line of postal cards, still trying to figure out the business part of it :d

Kisses from Casablanca <3 (I would be so happy if you could take a look on my blog, even if it's in french )

I enjoyed this immensely. I’m not in the creative world, but that doesn’t stop me from relating to all of your fantabulous lessons. I’m waiting for a possible acting job to open up and I’m so scared to leave my full time (boring and soul-sucking) job because of the offered security, but your journey proves that leaps of faith land you in groovy places.

    raaachellll! says:

SO GOOD, SO INSPIRING. love ya girl! bring blogshop back to portland — i’ll be there! xox

    Emily says:

I’m having a hard time putting into words how crazy I feel having had stumbled upon your blog and this video in particular at this time in my life…everything you had to say really resonated with me. Hearing that the journey can be incredibly confusing from someone as talented and inspiring as yourself definitely hit me. As a designer only a year and a half out of school, and also feeling somewhat defeated at times, it was really wonderful to hear how you got to where you are now. I’m working to find my own voice, striving to learn even from what can feel mundane & looking forward to curating a more vibrant future for myself. I’m currently Brooklyn based but am LA born and bred. I look forward to now continuing to watch you do what you do oh so well. Excited to see what you’re up to next! Not gonna lie, I also hope I get to say a big congrats in person one day. You seem very sweet and genuine. So on that note…you go girl! *highfives fist bump chest bump*

Amazing job!!! You did such a thorough recap which I appreciate. Sometimes in written interviews it’s hard to go in depth and really share how it all came together. One thing I’m curious about is timeline. At what point were you able to start working with brands etc for your blog? When did you see traffic really pick up? After 2 years of starting? 3?

    Thao says:

Thank you so much for sharing! This came at the perfect time, as I’m going through my own scary “What was I thinking” phase! But it will work out. Thanks for the reminder of that!

Thank you for sharing! Love your blog and design eye.

Hey Bri! I just wanted to thank you for this inspirational talk… I’m in highschool now and running my blog takes up a lot of time and energy but seeing your career path has inspired me to keep doing what I love!

    Jordan says:

I watched the whole damn thing. GREAT! The best part is your teenage notebook.

    Jess says:

    Leigh-Ann says:

    Loved watching your talk 🙂

    michaela says:

this is absolutely lovely! i’ve often wondered how you started out and i’m so happy to finally hear the story.

you’re such an inspiration and role model to myself and obviously so many other people. thank you for sharing your life, creativity, and even your insecurities with us. you are unlike any other blogger i’ve followed and it’s so refreshing!

    Vera says:

I laughed out loud multiple times! I wasn’t familiar with the Creative Morning-talks yet, but I will sure try to attend to one (or more)!

    Susan says:

Great video Bri, so inspiring, your openness, honesty and skill makes you TRULY an inspiration to all. Thanks for this!

you are SUCH an inspiration, bri! this has left me so full of possibility and ideas!

    Susannah B says:

Thank you so much for sharing this! It’s always inspirational to me to hear about others’ creative journeys and how they arrived to where they are now.

I loved this. In middle school I would make my friends contribute to my zine that I made on Microsoft Publisher 98. And then I’d go home and rearrange my room. All the time. Now I work at a magazine doing interior/prop styling. It’s funny when your adolescent self knows who you’ll be better than your 20 year old self. Again, loved hearing your journey, Bri.

    Katia says:

    You are so charming!
Loved watching this this morning, definitely needed a boost of inspiration this week and this was a great little dose of it.

I never knew that you went to ASU! Go Devils. 😉 Thanks for posting things. It’s just the inspiration I needed. You’re right – the scariest decisions always turn out to be the best.

First off, I love this video. I found it really inspiring! I used to have an inspiration binder (because I’d lose pages out of my journal *scatter-brain*).

I am an art teacher and I’d love to show this video to my senior portfolio classes. I think they could really benefit from hearing your story! Would that be okay with you if I use this for educational purposes?

    Thanks Bri!

You should never feel nervous about speaking in public, you’re great at it! Thanks for sharing this it’s definitely making me feel ready to make great things!

    Sara says:

Wow! I loved this video. What I liked the most is the honesty that you put in your words, opening up your feelings and being so humble. I really admire you. Grettings from Colombia

thanks so much for sharing this! you’ve got guts! and smarts, and a good eye. 🙂

Great talk Bri! I am always inspired by you and your ability to say yes to everything! I attending Blogshop Chicago in May but since have lost some of that inspiration, so this talk was just the lift I needed! Thanks for sharing, you’re doing great!

    Raven says:

This was super inspiring. Thanks for being totally normal (aka crazy) like the rest of us, Bri!

    Monica says:

I really enjoyed this. I do have one question about your structure? Do you work under your name, Designlovefest, blogshop or is each project different?

    kelly ann says:

Dude. Thanks for this. Sometimes I just sit back and think, “I have no clue how to do this!! Where do I start. What am I doing. I’m going to mess this up” and it really made me smile when you said, “I just Googled it until I figured it out.” Sounds silly, but it brought me such relief hearing that from someone in this business that I admire. None of us really knows what we’re doing, but we do it anyway – and when we share that with others in a heartfelt, honest, “hey, you’re not alone” way, it’s so refreshing and spreads a lot of hope. Thanks, Bri!

    Tiffany B. says:

This was awesome! I only read your blog and follow you online so to actually hear your voice is cool. To really hear you talk in your element about what you love. I have followed you online for a few years now I guess and I don’t leave comments very often (if at all). This made me want to say thank you Bri. I am also growing my business and brand and to hear you talk about your journey is very inspirational.

    Rebecca says:

Nice to see u in action. Thanks for sharing your story. Inspiring and impressive. Hope to meet you in the hood. Gracias mucho!

    AUGUST says:

This is the first time I’ve heard you TALK. You’re such a smartie-pants & a great speaker!! What you’ve shared is inspiring and encourages me to keep moving forward with my own freelancing job and creative projects. I went to school for graphic design, but I’m learning that I really love being in charge of all the details (from designing my own brand down to the product itself) and working with my hands more than computers. What you said about watching and learning…SO TRUE!! Every two months I look back and cringe a little…but I go easy on myself because I know it’s a PROCESS. I can’t quit my day job yet (cashiering at a grocery store, where I’ve designed some of the food product labels), but I know the day will arrive as long as I stick to it. Thanks for sharing Bri!

Hi Bri – Just wanted to let you know that I included this post on my ‘Friday Five’ (top 5 posts of the week) on A Few of My Favorite Things. – Lauren

    Ally says:

Thank you so much for posting this. It was great to hear about your journey first hand. As always, thanks for the inspiration.

    giulia says:

i just watched this and i want to cry! so good, you are such an inspiration:)))) i am applying to colleges right now and it is so scary to think about the future. my favorite activity at the moment seems to be watching videos and asking people about their careers, from the teenage angst to where they are now!
i really relate. i also always say yes to everything and kind of figure things out along the way. a month ago i went by myself to a conference on movement organizing and activism (a big conference, at the washington convention center, whoops) – i was suddenly asked to describe “my people” and, in the middle of this huge group of gradschool graduates, leaders of legit organizations and all that, i answered “my people are people that do not really know what they are doing, at all, but still do it nonetheless because they want to and because they care about it”. i got so many snaps, so i’ll just assume that none of those amazing people really knew anything when they started out, right?
    love you, bri!

    Leanna says:

That was incredible. Seriously, all I have been worrying about lately is what I’m going to do with my degree when I get out of school, how I’ll get jobs, etc. your talk reminded me that everyone has to go through the scary starting-out/newbie phase to figure it all out. That was so uplifting! Thanks!

    Nelly says:

Bri, This was so inspirational! It was awesome to meet you finally at the Calligraphy workshop a couple weeks ago and I can’t believe how doing something I love can change my life. I love reading your blog and being apart of something that makes me want to wake up everyday and paint a different color in my life! Your talk was inspirational and I couldn’t agree more with everything you said. Taking risks is scary but it changes you in so many ways and you grow up knowing so much more than you did the previous day! Thanks Bri! Nelly C.

    Jess says:

Bri! freaking loved your talk. I’m in Sydney Australia and will definitely keep an eye out for your workshops! I’m no designer but i love pretty things haha

Ahhh I love this! I’ve been following you for a while and I’m about to head out to the real world after college (which is terrifying), but this made me feel so much better about not being sure what I want to do! I’ve turned down some options that would pay a lot, but I wouldn’t enjoy being a part of. Thank you so much!

    Sarah says:

I’ve been considering a big leap over the past month and hearing about your journey has been really motivating for me. So thank you for that 🙂
